Sponsor | Halloween Tips, Tricks and Treats
Can you believe it's October? Fall conjures images of blazing leaves, jack-o-lanterns and festivals. For parents of food-allergic children, fall can also be a ‘tricky’ time of year. Trick or treating is likely at the top of every child’s to-do list, but can easily turn into a real-life fright if unsafe Halloween treats are consumed, touched or if protein particles are inhaled.
That’s why fall is the perfect time of year to remind parents of trick-or-treating hazards and what KFA offers you to make food-allergic children as safe as possible.
KFA has helpful resources, a great Safe Eats™ recipe database, and fantastic support forums where you can connect with other parents preparing for Halloween. See what they are all doing, ask questions or bounce ideas off other parents who really understand the special challenges Halloween presents for children with food allergies. |

Creating Better Lives Today™ Fundraising Campaign
Thanks to all of you who've sent in donations or held a KFA House Party to raise funds for KFA as we've kicked off KFA's fundraising campaign! We'll be tracking our fundraising progress with this widget on our home page.
We know that these are tough economic times. We will continue to provide fee waivers through our sponsored family membership program for those who need what we offer but can't afford to pay, and we will continue to provide as many new resources as possible, without charge. But we can only do it with your help!
Funds raised will be used to improve what we offer now, and to provide even more educational resources, parent support and food/cooking assistance to families in 2009.
Fundraising & Donations for KFA
KFA is a growing community of parents, health care professionals and businesses joining together to help families create better lives today for children with food allergies. We hope you will see why so many believe in our cause and support KFA! We extend a big "thank you" to the businesses and KFA members that have supported us with donations or fundraising events.

Children's Art Contest Winner
We are pleased to announce that Zoe, age 6, is the winner of this year's Children's Artwork Contest. Zoe received a winner's certificate and a small gift from KFA; the runners up - ranging in ages from 15 months to 9 years old, all shared beautiful drawings with us that we will be featuring on our Web site or using to make e-cards. All of the runners-up received a certificate of participation and a little gift from KFA. We thank all of you for sharing your artwork with us - we love kids with food allergies!
We will be making Zoe's artwork into an all-occasion card that we will offer for sale on our Web site in the near future.

High School Student Suspended In Peanut Allergy Incident
An article in the Wentachee, Washington World last week stated that a 19-year-old student was suspended from high school, and could face criminal charges, after he reportedly spread peanut butter on the forehead of a male student who has a peanut allergy.
Society's Lack Of Knowledge Of Food Allergies Can Greatly Impact Those Afflicted With Food Allergies
Researchers, led by Ruchi Gupta, MD MPH, assistant professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Children's Memorial Research Center, found that misconceptions around food allergy are prevalent among the general public; that parents have good knowledge but face many daily challenges; and that physicians differ in their approach to diagnosis and advice for children with food allergies.

Do we bring M-I-L-K into the house??
"Milk is banned in our house. I'm still breastfeeding the boys, but we've started to wonder what they will drink once they are weaned. For those of you who have a child anaphylactic to dairy, what have you done for your other kids? Has bringing milk into the house worked for you? If so, how do you handle it?"
What do you do when your child is allergic to milk? Do you keep your house free of milk and all milk products, or do you allow milk products in your home for everyone else? Parents share their varying views on the subject.
3 year old daughter losing her favorite foods - suggestions?
"In going wheat and egg-free, my daughter is losing many of her favorite foods (most of which are wheat-based). These have been her standby snacks and, in some ways, her "comfort" foods. I have some alternatives, which taste fine to me, but she doesn't like them."
One parent asks for help for her young child in adapting to new food restrictions, and parents offer a number of suggestions.
