New! Carefree Camping

Play it safe and prepare for a lifetime of lasting memories

Reluctant to release your food-allergic child into the great outdoors? Don't be. Children are among those who can gain the most from nature and children with food allergies are no exception.

Take your family camping this summer to enjoy the many entertaining and inexpensive benefits nature has to offer and discover this food-allergy friendly activity for yourself.

Unlike traditional vacations that often require eating meals at restaurants, one of the most enticing aspects of camping for parents of food-allergic children is that it offers control over preparing and consuming food.

Read the full article, which includes 5 tips to ensure your next camping trip is worry free and worth it!

Your Guide to Reporting Problems to FDA
Report food problems to the FDA Consumers play an important public health role by reporting to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) any adverse events (unexpected side effects) after using a medical product, or other problems with any products that the agency regulates including foods. Timely reporting allows the agency to take prompt action. There are a number of ways you can report problems to the agency, depending on the type of problem and product. This guide provides tips to help you make your report.

FDA 101: How to Use the Consumer Complaint System and MedWatch
When you have a problem with a food, drug, or other FDA-regulated product, the FDA wants to hear from you. Here's a new guide on the FDA Web site to learn how to report problems using two of FDA's main reporting systems.

Food Allergies on a Stick: The Risks of Summer Eating
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) issued a press release this month offering tips for staying safe this summer while managing food allergies.

"People with food allergies must be extra vigilant when eating at summer fairs and festivals," said Amal H. Assa'ad, MD, FAAAAI and Chair of the AAAAI Adverse Reactions to Foods Committee. "There are many questions about ingredients, preparations and possible cross-contamination that if left unanswered could lead to an allergic reaction."

When a School Refuses to Protect a Child with Life-threatening Food Allergies
Wrightslaw provides details about a recent Office of Civil Rights (OCR) investigation of a school district in Virginia. The school district initially determined that one of its students with potentially life-threatening food allergies did not have a disability and was, therefore, not eligible for services and protections under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

For those unfamiliar: Section 504 protects those with disabilities, and for those with life-threatening food allergies who are determined eligible for a "504 Plan," the plan would address the child's allergy-related needs and ensure a safe educational environment.

After the family filed a complaint with the OCR, the OCR investigated and concluded that the school district needed to re-evaluate the student for eligibility for a Section 504 plan due to the potentially life-threatening nature of her food allergies.

I had to use epi for the first time

"Beyond a shadow of a doubt, it's by far the scariest thing I've ever had to experience in my life, and after reading all about everyone's stories of reactions and such on this website for over a year now, I can now truly understand exactly what it feels like, and the horror of seeing that helpless look on your child's face when they know something horribly wrong is happening to them, and they don't know how to make it stop."
Parents offer comfort to a mom who shares the details of her son's anaphylactic reaction after eating a cheese cracker.
Funny restaurant experience

"Today, and asked if they could please check to see what was in the buns. First person said, "no idea." I said, "could you please find out?" He grumbled a bit, and got a supervisor. She grumbled a bit, and finally got the manager...At first I thought he was being clueless, but he was actually arguing with me about cross contamination!"
Parents share some of their restaurant experiences from the frustrating to the whimsical, and discuss whether you should leave a larger tip for good service when a restaurant does a great job providing a safe meal for a food allergic child.
