Four More Reasons to Read Labels EVERY Time!
Thanks to all of you who have been sending us your confusing or surprising product ingredient and label reading experiences. By sharing them with us, we will spread the word, and you will be helping to keep other kids safe! Here are some we recently received:
Fact: Products made in different sizes, varieties or packaging may have different ingredients or cross contamination issues. Examples:
Gerber Grins and Giggles® Infant Tooth and Gum Cleanser contains milk and egg ingredients; Gerber Grins and Giggles Toddlers Tooth and Gum Cleanser does not. Ingredient Listings
Boca® Chik’n products "with natural ingredients" contain egg while other varieties do not. Ingredient Listings
Wonka brand Tart N Tinys® do not have egg but the chewy varieties of Wonka Tart N Tinys® do contain egg. Similarly, the chewy variety of Wonka Runts®, Wonka Shockers®, Wonka Chewy Giant Sweet Tarts® and Chewy Mini Sweetarts® contain egg as well. Wonka Sweet Tart Gummy Bugs® are made on equipment that processes milk. Ingredient Listings
Fact: "May contains" and other types of advisory statements are strictly voluntary, so don't assume that the absence of a "may contains" type of statement means the product doesn't include contamination with allergens you need to avoid. Always check with the manufacturer. And if you do see a "may contains" type of warning, don't ignore it. There is a good chance it will actually contain the allergens listed in the "may contains" statement. Example:
Nutrisystem® products are not recommended for anyone with a peanut allergy. More Info
Have you found a product with a confusing label or have you been surprised about an ingredient found in an unlikely product? Send us the details and we will use your examples in upcoming issues.

New Survey Shows Most School Nurses Have Students Who Do Not Bring Auto-Injectable Epinephrine to School
A new survey conducted by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) found that 72% of school nurses have students with a known history of allergies or prior use of epinephrine whose parents have not provided the school with auto-injectable epinephrine. Also known as adrenaline, epinephrine is the first-line standard of care for treating anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can be caused by nuts, insect bites or stings and other allergens. Eight out of ten school nurses (82%) surveyed have also seen increased numbers of children at risk for anaphylaxis in the past few years.
"We cannot overlook the importance of preparation when sending students back to school," said Amy Garcia, RN, MSN, executive director of NASN. "It is crucial that parents of children at risk for severe allergic reactions provide the school with auto-injectable epinephrine."
